    Fisher Looked At Wrong Guy

Looks as if Jimbo Fisher was looking at an unlikely prospect for tight end when he approached former FSU quarterback Xavier Lee about switching positions.

Kind of makes you wonder about Fisher's ability to evaulate talent. Wondering why he did not approach perhaps Drew Weatherford about the position. Weatherford has been given three years at QB without any significant success.

Fisher could then have started Ponder or Richardson and have had Lee as backup in 2008. He would then have the best talent at QB and Weatherford at a position that he could probably handle. Instead Lee is headed to the NFL draft.

Weatherford hasn't been that bad and he's been a couple marks better than Lee or Rix have been. Drew can't catch the 3-4 dropped balls every game the the receivers just can't haul in. He can't provide a running game that is missing because the O-line can't sustain blocks. He hasn't set the world on fire but considering the subpar performance of those around him and the miserable performance of the coaching staff, he hasn't don't half bad.

Well, I will have to disagree with you as well as my son. In my opinion, Drew is an average QB at best. He has not shown any appreciable improvement over the last three years.

I think we're better off with Lee gone. Regardless of his talent, he's been nothing but a cancer to the team whining about playing time and pressure and not showing up to class. We're set up to be just fine in 08 with Weatherford starting and Ponder as his backup. Then Manuel can come in if they both go down since he'll most definitely redshirt.

I'm not for a second saying that Drew will light it up, but another Spring with Jimbo can't hurt. Also, Lee is already gone, so move on.

let's hope that you are wrong regarding Drew. Ponder or Richardson should be given a real shot at starting in 2008. Re Manuel, you better hope that Bobby Bowden doesn't have a decision in where he will play. If so, Manuel may be at wide receiver or tight end.

Re: XL - I think that decision had more to do with attitude than talent. OTOH, had Fisher been here a couple of years earlier, I believe we would've had a completely different situation. Let's just hope that Ponder does well enough this spring to get the old man off his stubbornness.

Hope you are correct. XL had all the talent in the world and I think Bowden had his mind made up re Weatherford and nothing was going to change it.

I'm tired of the slams on Drew. He set a Freshman ACC passing record, breaking a current NFL QB in River's record, when he had a decent supporting cast. Since then, he's had an OL with more holes than the Titanic and no running game with dancers in the backfield. When he finally got a decent QB coach, his INT's fell throught the floor. If the receivers would catch the catachable balls, welll, you get the point.

That said, Ponder should start since (a) he's at least as good as DW and (b) he'll be around for the next 2 years. D'vo needs to be on the field as safety, WR and special teams.

I am not slamming Drew. I think he is a great kid and a role model. However, I think he ie an average QB at best. My point is that if you wanted to put the best talent on the field, then Lee would have clearly been the person. Drew has reached his potential.

I actually think it was a good idea to approach Lee about the TE position. It should have happened 2 years ago. He was given a chance to prove himself at QB and it didn't work out. He could not remember the playbook/assignments and had trouble reading defenses. He would be a great fit at tight end or wide receiver given his size and mobility. Looking forward to what E.J. Manuel has to offer.
