My View: The Brawl and The "U"

The recent brawl last Saturday at the Orange Bowl between Miami and FIU was deplorable and represents everything college football is not. The behavior by the players was despicable and was an embarassment to the schools and the game itself. FIU seems to have taken harsh actions in regard to the incident by suspending a number of players and kicking off others. So what about Miami?

Well, the "U' seems to have taken a much softer approach to this disgusting conduct as evidenced by the statements of both the president of the university and Larry Coker. Witness the statement by the university president yesterday when she stated in part..."we will not throw any student under the bus for instant restoration of our image or our reputation. I will not hang them in a public square. I will not eliminate their participation at the university. I will not take away their scholarships." This is unfortunate although not surprising. Miami has been involved in more fights than I care to recall.

The university should have kicked the worst offenders off the team and taken away their scholarships. That would have been the right thing to do. The president and Larry Coker should be ashamed of their actions. This has no place in collge football. Period.
