Want to know what is wrong with college football? It is the absurd salaries paid to coaches and the athletic directors who bend over and take it. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has some interesting facts on the salaries of ACC and SEC coaches.
How's this one for starters? Gator head coach Urban Meyer makes $3,487,038 and yet there is a provision in his contract that provides $100,000 per year “to assist in educational expenses for his family.” You have to be kidding me.
And closer to home, when Bobby Bowden leaves Florida State, unless it is for violating his contract, he will receive a $1 million bonus. What recession?

I have to say $1,000,000 to Bowden upon his departure doesn't seem extravagant to me. I read a compelling article the other day about the impact that Bowden and his success with the football program has had on FSU and on Tallahasse over the decades and it is probably immeasurable. How much money has ultimately filtered down to FSU - through sports, academics, enrollment, building programs, expansion, etc - directly or indirectly because of the sports program? No one probably knows, but $1,000,000 would seem a drop in the bucket considering Bowden's impact. It's easy to criticize the glaring problems Bowden has either ignored or allowed, but I think there needs to be a recognition once in awhile of the true contributions he's made.
Eric, I have to respectfully disagree. Bowden has been handsomely compensated for many years now. No one is ignoring what he has done for the program but in light of university cuts and layoffs, this seems obscene. Perhaps Bowden will also see it that way and donate the money back to FSU.
I respectfully disagree with your respectful disagreement :) I think the "bonus" is not disproportionate to Bowden's contributions even considering his salary & economic conditions. But in any case, I won't be surprise if Bowden, after leaving, continues to support FSU in monetary and non-monetary ways, so your hope that he might return some $ will probably come to fruition.
