In the Southern Conference, FSU opponents Western Carolina and Chattanooga were picked to finish number 8 and 7 respectively in a poll by the Southern Conference coaches. There are 9 teams in the Southern Conference.
For the 2008 Southern Conference Preseason All-Conference Teams, RB Bryan Fitzgerald from Chattanooga was the only player from either school to be named to the first team.
FSU plays Western Carolina in Tallahassee in the season opener on September 6. The Noles host Chattanooga on September 13.
In the preseason poll of the media, Colorado was picked to finish fourth in the North Division of the Big 12 conference. Darrell Scott of Colorado was chosen Preseason Newcomer of the Year in a Big 12 Conference media poll. Colorado's defensive tackle George Hypolite said this about Scott. "... if I'm worth my salt, in three years, you'll be talking about him winning the Heisman Trophy." Colorado had one player picked on the Big 12 Preseason first team, defensive tackle George Hypolite.
The Noles play Colorado in Jacksonville on September 27.
At the SEC Media Days, the media voted Florida as SEC Champions. Voted to the All SEC team, the Gators had three players named on first team offense: QB Tim Tebow, WR Percy Harvin, and TE Cornelius Ingram. On the first team defense, one Gator was named, LB Brandon Spikes.
FSU plays the Gators in Tallahassee on November 29.
