Canes, Eagles, And Terps Continue Practice

Miami, Boston College, and Maryland Sports Information Excerpts:

After two days of working in helmets and shorts, the University of Miami football team worked out in shells for the first time Monday morning during the team's third practice of the fall at the Greentree Practice Fields.

The Hurricanes continued to work in 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 situations, in addition to some 9-on-9 red zone drills. Working through temperatures in the lower-to-mid 80's, the team practiced in favorable conditions with a steady wind and cloudy skies throughout the morning.

"We got a lot of running work in today," head coach Randy Shannon said. "When you're in shorts, everybody looks good because we play without contact but today we were able to get some stuff corrected.

On Tuesday, the University of Miami football team worked out in shells at the Greentree Practice Fields, completing the team's final workout before going to full pads on Wednesday.

"All around it was a pretty good day," head coach Randy Shannon said. "We worked on a lot of punting drills today as far as overloads, double-games and different fronts like that because I think that is going to be a vital key as far as what we are trying to get done on special teams and the punting game. You can win or lose a game in those types of situations."

The Boston College football team opened its preseason practice on Monday, August 4 on Shea Field in Chestnut Hill. Maroon and white jerseys took the field for the first time to prepare for the 2008 season which begins on August 30 against Kent State.

The Eagles took the field with blue skies above them as the individual units separated and worked in groups. For the second year in a row, however, a dark cloud threatened while the team went through its stretches which led to a downpour for about 20 minutes.

Having seen it before, BC continued through the wet conditions and the rain eventually subsided.

FSU plays Boston College in Tallahassee on November 15.

The Terps have only practiced for two days, but head coach Raplh Friedgen indicated after Tuesday's practice that some players atop the depth chart are being pushed. Redshirt freshman Torrey Smith is pushing incumbent starter Isaiah Williams at X receiver. Williams has started the last two seasons, but Smith was singled out in the spring as a potential difference maker by Friedgen and the rest of the coaching staff. Senior left tackle Scott Burley, who was a second-team All-ACC choice, is trying to fend off a challenge from Bruce Campbell, who played as a true freshman last season. Friedgen also singled out freshman running back Davin Meggett for his play during camp. Meggett has not only showed quickness running the ball, but also blocked a punt in special teams drills.

Maryland plays Florida State at Maryland on November 22.
