I was struck by Coach McHale's statements recently regarding the running game:
"The Seminoles averaged under 100 yards rushing per game and 3.2 yards per carry last season. “That's not good enough,” McHale said. “We charted out 47 passes and 25 runs per game last season. We need to increase the number of carries per game. We need to get better than a 4-yard average. You have to have more at-bats. The more times you throw the worm in there fishing, the more chance you have to catch a fish. You might not catch one the first time.
“We need to up the number of runs per game, and in order to do that you have to give (offensive coordinator)Jeff Bowden confidence that, 'Hey, we've got a little running game going here - let's stay with. Let's not abort to the pass.' "
So why didn't we do this last season when we had Leon Washington and more experience than we will have this year? I think we all know the answer-Jeff Bowden. Unfortunately,in my opinion, Jeff Bowden is back. Hopefully, McHale will have a larger role in the offensive play calling this year. We have seen the tendency of Jeff Bowden. If the run falters, abandon it all together. We shall see if McHale is allowed to have a greater role.
