Leigh Tiffin is the field goal kicker for Bama. The 6'1" 189 pound sophomore from Muscle Shoals, Alabama has known about Bama since birth. Leigh's father was also a kicker for Bama. Van Tiffin's 52-yard field goal as time expired lifted Alabama to a 25-23 victory over Auburn in the 1985 Iron Bowl, one of the most memorable games in the series. His father was an All-American in 1986 at Alabama and holds the school record for the longest field goal (57 vs. Texas A&M in 1985) and the most career PAT’s (135-135).
Tiffin in his last two games is 3 for 3 in field goals made from more than 40 yards. He has made all extra points for the season. Through four games, he has made 9 out of 14 field goals for a 64.3% completion percentage.
If you are a long time Nole fan, you shudder at the thought of the upcoming game against Bama being decided by the field goal kicker. "Wide Right" is painfully etched in many Nole memories.
Gary Cismesia, the 5'11", 205 pound senior from Parrish,Florida has made all his extra points through three games extending his streak of successful extra-points to 38 dating to last season. More importantly,he is a perfect 6 for 6 on field goals. He has only attempted one field goal from beyond the 40 yard line.
FSU coach Jody Allen is overseeing special teams including the kickers for ths first time this year. In years past, that duty was shared by all the coaches. Says Allen, "He's having a good year and it's fun for him. Everything's fun when you're good at it. He's been through both sides of it. I think he's mature enough to understand it's just a game. He's worked hard at all those little things and it's paid off." Adds Bobby Bowden, "So far, so good, I just hope he continues it." Don't we all.
