Former Florida State football coach Tom Nugent, who led FSU's ascent into big-time college football and poplularized the I-formation, died on Thursday.
Nugent was FSU's coach from 1953-58, compiling a 34-28-1 record. He engineered FSU's first victory over a major school (Tennessee), and he lobbied successfully for the first game against Florida in 1958. He also coached at VMI and Maryland.
He was aslo selected to receive the Outstanding Contribution to Amateur Football award by the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame in 2000.
‘‘It’s nice they remember me,’’ he told the Tallahassee Democrat in 2000.
Nugent was chosen for his creation of the I-formation, the typewriter huddle and the double quarterback formation, as well as for the numerous clinics he staged using top-name coaches.
