Freeman Named Canes QB And NC Has Groza Nominee

Junior Kirby Freeman has been named the starting quarterback for the Miami Hurricanes for the 2007 season opener against Marshall Saturday, head coach Randy Shannon announced at his Tuesday press conference.

"Kirby Freeman will be our starting quarterback for the Marshall game," Shannon told members of the media. "We are excited about both of the quarterbacks. We are fortunate to have two quality quarterbacks that can lead us in the right direction. Both of the guys worked well in the offseason. They did some things to try to win the job, but as a coach, you have to make tough decisions. We feel that Kirby will give us the best opportunity to win games. Kyle Wright has done a wonderful job preparing himself."

University of Maryland senior running back Lance Ball was named to the preseason watch list for the 2007 Doak Walker Award . The Doak Walker Award is presented annually to the nation's top collegiate running back. This year's field includes 2006 recipient Darren McFadden of Arkansas.

University of North Carolina place-kicker Connor Barth has been named to the preseason watch list for the 2007 Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award. A senior from Wilmington, N.C., Barth was the only kicker in the country with a 1.000 field goal percentage in the NCAA rankings. He made all 10 attempts in 2006 and has a current streak of 11 in a row.
