Here's an odd fact. The guy with the most rushing yards for Wake Forest is not a running back. It is receiver Kenny Moore who had 84 yards rushing in the Deacon's win over Duke on Saturday. For the year, Moore has 245 rushing yards and 3 TDs. Not bad for a receiver.
The marquee back for Wake Forest has been 5'10" 212 pound Micah Andrews. After a productive sophomore season where he ran for 621 yards and a touchdown Wake Forest running back Micah Andrews was expected to have a break-out junior season before a torn ACL in his left knee ended his season in 2006 just three games in. Andrews is the son of former Atlanta Falcons running back William Andrews. He is back in the lineup this year but has not put up any impressive numbers as yet.
Andrews had 42 yards rushing and 1 TD in the Duke game. For the year, he has 166 yards rushing and 1 TD. Freshmen back Josh Adams at 6' and 180 pounds has more rushing yards with 224 yards and 2 TDs. Adams was the number one running back recruit in North Carolina last year. I am told by those in the media in North Carolina that probably Adams will be playing more than Andrews. According to one source, Adams "is clearly the faster and more durable back."
And then we have Antone Smith for the Noles. Smith had a lackluster game against NC State on Saturday rushing for 55 yards and no TDs against a NC State defense that had allowed a ton of rushing yards.
Smith has 290 yards rushing for the year and 3 TDs. Nole fans may recall that Bowden had predicted a 1,000 yard season for Smith. Ain't going to happen. It may be time for someone else to step into the starting role and see what they can do.
