    Bernie Leaves The Field

The name of Dr. Bernard Sliger is well known to Nole fans who have been around the Seminoles for a long time. "Bernie" as he was known died today at the age of eighty- three in his home state of Michigan. Sliger served as FSU president from 1977 to 1991 after four years as the university's executive vice president and chief academic officer.

The popular leader was asked to return to the helm as interim president after his successor Dale Lick resigned in 1993. Sliger served in that capacity until Talbot "Sandy" D'Alemberte became president in 1994.

Sliger had excellent academic credentials and was responsible for many additions and advances at FSU during his tenure. He will be known by Nole fans as an ardent supporter and fan of the football team. One report summarizes Bernie as "... famously fond of beer, food and football." Sliger twice extended the contract of head football coach Bobby Bowden to fend off advances from other schools. On Thursday, maybe the Noles can win one for Bernie.
