During his weekly Atlantic Coast Conference teleconference, Bobby Bowden was asked if Xavier Lee will have a short leash. Bowden replied: "It's a very fair question. Last year, we didn't think it was a short leash, but it may have been (after Lee started three games before Drew Weatherford took over again).
"We've given him the reins of going out there and playing. I think he's much further along this year than he was a year ago. I hope he can keep up what he's doing, because it gives us another dimension to our offense. "But no, there will not be a short leash on him."
Junior tailback Antone Smith said he is healing in time for Saturday's game against North Carolina State. Smith has been slowed by turf toe through the first four games of the season. ''The toe has come a long way,'' Smith said. ``The toe doesn't bother me as much. It is probably about 95 percent right now with the toe. "
DE Neefy Moffett returned to practice Wednesday, but continues to recover from a hip injury suffered in the first quarter against Alabama. Moffett joins two other defensive lineman, NG Budd Thacker (toe) and DT Andre Fluellen (elbow), as players listed questionable for Saturday's game against N.C. State.
