    O.C. Prospect: George Henshaw

Another O.C. prospect for the offensive coordinator position is that of George Henshaw who has ties with FSU. Henshaw has been an assistant in the NFL for 18 years and walked sidelines for 36 seasons over his coaching career. During that span, Henshaw has tutored nearly every position group on offense, served as an assistant head coach, an offensive coordinator and gotten the most out top players. He is now in New Orleans as running backs coach, and his experience and the respect he is held in within league circles is evident in his additional title as senior offensive assistant.

Prior to coming to New Orleans, Henshaw spent nine seasons (1997-2005) with the Tennessee Titans, the last six as assistant head coach/offense. In that position, Henshaw assisted in game-planning the team's offensive attack as well as coaching the tight ends. Since Henshaw joined the Titans, the tight end position played an integral part in Tennessee's offense, with the group accounting for 149 receptions -- the second-highest single-season combined total for a tight end corps in league history.

The Titans' tight ends caught 845 passes over the last nine seasons, the most in the NFL during that span. In eight of those nine seasons, the group recorded at least 70 receptions. During his time in Tennessee, Henshaw also groomed TE Frank Wycheck, who led the team in receptions five times and was voted to three Pro Bowls. In his final season, Wycheck became the fourth tight end in NFL history to record 500 career receptions.

Henshaw served as the offensive coordinator of the New York Giants from 1993-96. During that stretch, the Giants had one of the NFL's best running games, including a league-high average of 138.1 yards per game in 1993. Before joining the Giants, Henshaw spent five years (1988-92) with Denver, including as offensive coordinator/ wide receivers coach in his final season. Prior to that, Henshaw coached Denver's wide receivers in 1991, and the offensive line from 1988-90. In those years the Broncos won two AFC West titles and appeared in Super Bowl XXIV.

Henshaw was the head coach at the University of Tulsa in 1987 before arriving in Denver. He began his coaching career at his alma mater of West Virginia from 1970-75 before moving on to Florida State. He spent seven years (1976-82) as an offensive and defensive line coach for the Seminoles, including four years (1979-82) in both duties. From 1979-82 he served as offensive coordinator, and in his first two years at that position FSU had a record of 21-1, and he helped head coach Bobby Bowden implement one of the best offensive systems in the country.

Henshaw's son, Matthew played tight end at Florida State from 2002-05.

This is one of the best options for FSU. He has the experience on a level that all the other prospects don't have, the NFL. There isn't a defense in college that can compare to the defenses that he has faced in the NFL. The talent that he could bring in for a staff and the players he would attract due to his NFL ties would be invaluable. He has ties to FSU and it should be interesting to see what happens in a couple of weeks. Keep us posted as best as you can.
