N.C. State’s football coaching search, in a sudden and surprising twist, appeared to be ending with the Wolfpack hiring Boston College coach Tom O’Brien. According to the Raleigh, North Carolina News Observer,"former Wolfpack quarterback Philip Rivers, now the starter for the San Diego Chargers, told the North County (Calif.) Times today that O’Brien would be the choice to replace Chuck Amato, who was fired Nov. 26, a day after State finished the season 3-9."
“It's Tom O'Brien,” Rivers told the newspaper. “I got a call this morning and they said it was a done deal.”
Several sources closely associated with the ACC, NCSU, the athletics department and the football program also confirmed late tonight that NCSU had reached an agreement with O’Brien, who has been at Boston College 10 years and is the school’s most successful football coach.
