* The University of Miami will be without one of the nation's finest defensive backs next year.Kenny Phillips, a 6-2, 211-pound safety out of Miami Carol City High, will forgo his senior season to enter the NFL Draft. Phillips and fellow junior pro prospect Calais Campbell, a defensive end, said Sunday during the UM awards ceremony that they each had sent to the NFL College Advisory Committee their requests for NFL Draft projections. ESPN analyst Mel Kiper Jr. has Phillips listed as the No. 1 junior safety.
* Clemson running back James Davis was one of five juniors that included defensive end Phillip Merling, safety Michael Hamlin, quarterback Cullen Harper and receiver Aaron Kelly who submitted paperwork to the NFL’s Advisory Committee for a prediction of how they would be slated in the draft.The deadline for underclassmen to enter the draft is Jan. 15.
