Tommy Boy Stays at Clemson And Jim Loves Wake

Catching up on ACC hiring carousel:

    * Apparently Clemson alumni and fans love mediocrity or something close to it. They were on the verge of getting rid of Tommy Bowden who folds like a cheap chair and instead upped his salary to keep him. Bowden turned down an offer from Arkansas. This is the same Tommy Bowden that in his tenure at Clemson has yet to win an ACC championship. Bowden’s total package could be about $2.5 million or so annually, including a four-year extension that, if he stays until the end, would keep him with the Tigers through 2014.

    * In another spurn, Wake Forest head coach Jim Grobe has turned down the offer of Arkansas to stay at Wake Forest. "He called and said he wants to continue as our football coach," Demon Deacons athletic director Ron Wellman said Thursday. Wonder if his ability to beat FSU entered into his decision?

    * Duke who is looking for a coach has contacted Navy coach Paul Johnson about its football head coaching vacancy. Georgia Tech who is also looking is considering Johnson.
