Florida State head coach Bobby Bowden announced Tuesday that former Seminole and NFL running back Dexter Carter will join the Florida State coaching staff as running backs coach. Carter, who starred for FSU from 1986-89 and played seven seasons in the NFL, replaces Billy Sexton who resigned in December to accept a position with the FSU Foundation.
"I'm glad that we have our offensive staff completed and I'm anxious to see Dexter working with our running backs," said Bowden."Dexter has the knowledge and personality we were looking for to work with our offense. He brings NFL experience and he knows what we are looking for in our program."
Carter was the first pick of the defending Super Bowl champion San Francisco 49ers in 1990 and was selected in the first round with the 25th pick overall. He played for San Francisco from 1990-94 before being signed as a free agent by the New York Jets in 1995.He played 10 games with the Jets before returning to the same team he started with, the San Francisco 49ers, to finish his career. Over the course of his career, Carter won five NFC West championships and a Super Bowl Championship in 1994. He totaled 1,042 career rushing yards in the NFL and was one of the league's top kickoff and punt return specialists. He was named to the San Francisco 49ers' 50th Anniversary All-Time Team.
Carter led Florida State in rushing as a senior in 1989 with 684 yards on 131 carries and scored eight touchdowns. He was fourth on the team in receiving as a senior with 25 catches for 297 yards. He was FSU's fifth all-time career rusher with 1,788 yards on 327 carries when he graduated in 1989, and still ranks 12th on the all-time list. His 17 career rushing touchdowns were fourth all-time when he left and rank 8th today. He helped lead Florida State to three Top 4 finishes in the country and was a team captain in 1989.
"I'm so excited to be back with the FSU program," said Carter."Coming back as a coach at FSU is something that I thought about maybe 10 years ago, but I never thought that things would fall just right. It just worked out perfectly for me to be able to come back and I can't wait to get started."
